The Centre for Entrepreneurial and Vocational Studies (CEVS) of Al-Hikmah University Ilorin was established to be at the forefront of forging purposeful integration in liberal and applied learning that provides the students with knowledge, skills, morals and intellectual virtues that form the basis for life- long learning and contribution as well as facilitate entrepreneurial activities towards self employment.
The review of the report by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) an Agency of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI) in collaboration with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) submitted in April 2018 indicated that there are problems associated with skills in Nigeria. Supply, demand and mismatches and gaps which have contributed to high employment rate and under utilization of both human and natural resources of Nigeria is fanning the amber of poverty for all categories of Nigerians especially among youths.
CEVS consequently strives to re-orientate the mindset of our students in particular and our environment in general by way of providing opportunities to recognize and develop skills through entrepreneurial and vocational practices.
Motto:
“Creating Job Providers”
Vision:
To be the foremost Centre in Entrepreneurial and Vocational Studies in Nigeria.
Mission:
Providing relevant entrepreneurial skills for accelerated labour productivity in Nigeria.
Curriculum Development of CEVS
A: Executive Programmes
Several people now prefer to attempt professional certification of their professional bodies, rather than undergo the tedious post-graduate studies that are often not recognized by the regulatory institutions, thereby rendering most University-based post-graduate certificates technically inferior to professional qualifications. CEVS has developed several courses with robust entrepreneurship curriculum that would appeal to young graduates seeking employment but also for those already on employment but may be getting tired of daily routine or monotonous activities related to being an employee.
- Specialization Skill Acquisition
Skills to empower young graduates to becoming employers of labour rather than job seekers, especially in their main field of studies are not taught in most tertiary institutions. Virtually all programmes offered in our tertiary institutions can be annexed to create entrepreneurs as consultants, contractors, suppliers, sale representatives, manufacturers, trainers, sundry service providers etc. but lack of relevant curriculum and skill acquisitions have made it unachievable. CEVS has developed several courses with robust entrepreneurship curriculum that are attractive and would appeal to young graduates.
- Vocational Courses
Several professional bodies and regulatory agencies established by government now provide for mandatory licensing of technical service providers (individuals and corporate bodies) to enhance best practices and quality assurance. The training of artisans to enable them qualifies for registration and licensing by regulatory authorities are in high demand. In addition, short courses that could improve service delivery and skills of artisans and other professionals are being offered by CEVS.
- Curriculum for Al-Hikmah University Students
Parents are now becoming increasingly conscious of “end results” of tertiary education of their wards as certificates are gradually becoming a little more than a beautifully crafted piece of paper with their name inscribed on it. Consequently, a robust entrepreneurship curriculum that could enhance employability or outright job creation after graduation would appeal to more parents as offered by CEVS.
Schedule
The general course for all participants of CEVS programmes holds on Fridays from 4 – 6.30pm while the other parts of the training hold from 9am – 6pm on Saturdays.
