Abstract

The study was carried out to investigate social studies teachers’ utilization of the national school curriculum recommended teaching methods in Edo. Descriptive survey method was used in the study while the multi-state sampling technique was used to obtain a total of thirty teachers and their students. Three research questions and two hypotheses were raised for the study. Two research instruments, namely SSAT and SSTMC were also used for the study. The simple percentage, the t-test and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient were used for the analysis of data. The analysis of data revealed that Social Studies teachers do not utilize the recommended methods to teach the subject and there is no significant difference between male and female Social Studies teachers in the use of teaching method. It further revealed that there is no significant relationship between teaching method and students’ academic performance. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the non attainment of Social Studies aims and objective was due in part to the problem of non utilization of the national recommended curriculum teaching methods. Consequently, the study recommended that the inspectorate and the school administrators should be strengthened and equipped to supervise teachers in order to ensure that teachers utilize the national curriculum recommended teaching methods.
