RELEVANCE OF LIBRARY EDUCATION IN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IN ILORIN, KWARA STATE

Abstract
The paper was aimed at identifying the relevance of library Education in Higher Institutions in Ilorin, Kwara State. Sample of students was drawn from five higher institutions in Ilorin. Twenty students were selected by means of stratified random sampling technique in each institution, giving a total of 100 respondents in all. Respondents were asked to respond to six items pertaining to the importance of library education. Results showed that: Library education enhances students understanding of the library use; all students, not only those majoring in library education, should undergo a general course in library education. The result also indicated that library education had a positive impact on students’ overall academic performance. It was recommended that all higher institutions in Ilorin in particular and Nigeria in general should have a modem library, stocked with up-to-date books, journals, ‘encyclopedias and other relevant information, materials.
