SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES AND SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN KWARA STATE

Abstract
Education is a yardstick to measure socio-economic, cultural, and technological development as well as skill acquisition. Poor implementation of school development programmes is affecting students’ academic performance in Kwara State. Thus, this explains why the study investigated the relationships between school development programmes and students’ academic performance in Kwara State. Descriptive survey design was used for the study. All the secondary school principals represented the population for this study. Proportional sampling technique was used to select 196 out of 347 secondary schools principals as the respondents. Questionnaire and result proforma were used to collect data, while Mean rating, percentage, multiple regression and Pearson product-moment correlation statistics were used to answer and test the hypotheses formulated. The study revealed that: school development programmes were available but not adequate, implementation of school development programmes was low with overall mean score of 1.87, and, students’ academic performance was encouraging with average of 71% of the students having 5credits including English Language and Mathematic. There was significant relationship between school development programmes and students’ academic performance (R square) of .309. (Calculated p-value = .000 < set p value= .05) = H0 rejected. The study concluded that school development programmes has influence and can be used to improve students’ academic performance. The study therefore recommended that, State Government should embark on more school development programmes in order to positively achieve secondary school students’ academic performance.
