PARENTING STYLES AS DETERMINANTS OF INDISCIPLINE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ILORIN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KWARA STATE

Abstract

This study investigated parenting styles as predictors of secondary school students’ indiscipline in Ilorin west local government area of Kwara State. The purposes of the study were to identify the relationship between each of the parenting style and indiscipline among secondary school students; examining the comparative contribution of parenting styles to the prediction of indiscipline and determining the relative contributions of the parenting styles to the prediction of indiscipline. The correlational research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprises of public secondary schools in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State. Simple Random Sampling Procedure was used to select 150 secondary school students within the local government area. Buri’ (1991) Parenting Authority Questionnaire and Abdulkareem’s (2019) Student Indiscipline Scale were used to collecting the necessary data. The data collected were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis. The five hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was significant relationship between authoritarian parenting style and indiscipline among secondary school students in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State (r.cal = 0.37, df = 148 and p < 0.05); there was significant relationship between authoritative parenting style and indiscipline among students (r.cal = -0.26, df = 148 and p < 0.05); there was significant relationship between permissive parenting style and indiscipline among secondary school students (r.cal = 0.29, df = 148 and p < 0.05); the parenting styles comparatively made significant contribution to the prediction of indiscipline among secondary school students (89%, F. ratio = 375.72 and p < 0.05); and that permissive parenting style made the highest relative contribution to the prediction of indiscipline, this is followed by authoritarian parenting style  . Authoritative parenting style did not make significant relative contribution to the prediction of indiscipline among secondary school students , The findings are discussed and necessary recommendations, which include the fact that parents, teachers, government, counsellors and other helping professionals should play their roles as expected so as to put a stop to indiscipline among secondary school students, are put forward.
